New Mills

A day trip to New Mills was a real eye opener. The rivers Goyt and Sett have cut the most dramatic, vertical gorge above which the town is built. To go about their business the good people of New Mills then had to build umpteen bridges to get roads and rails from one side of the gorge to the other.

Two mills were built at the bottom of the gorge (known as The Torrs). Torr Mill burnt down a century ago but Torr Vale Mill continued to produce cotton for two centuries up until 2000. Unfortunately it is currently derelict, which while romantic, is a bit of a scar at the centre of a delightful little town, with its two railways stations and Millennium Walkway.

The other centre of industrial activity is based around the Peak Forest Canal, in Newtown, above the rivers.

A derelict mill is just my photographic cup of tea, but I will need to return to do it justice.

The rock face around the ruins of Torr Mill is most dramatic.

New Mill Central Station is perched precariously above Torr Vale Mill and even has a ticket office although apparently no bike rack.

A visit to the Peak Forest Canal basin will have to wait until another visit but I did manage to rise above a germ dominated Christmas/New Year to walk the length of the South Yorkshire Navigation in Sheffield,

A reflection of Sheffield's controversial incinerator brought on a fit of visual ambiguity.
