Heptonstall

I enjoyed visiting Heptonstall so much that I went again the following week with Graham. It's a tiny cobbled village but has three churches. A medieval ruin, a victorian parish church and the oldest Methodist Chapel in the country.

The old and new parish churches are within the same churchyard with most of the gravestones rearranged to make an uneven pavement.

.

The ruins of the old church, the gravestones and the views of the distant moors evoked a powerfully dismal but romantic feeling.

.

In fact much of Heptonstall, all stone buildings and cobbled streets, could be romantic or dismal depending on one's mood and the weather.

Fay Godwin's images kept popping in to my mind and its a place to return to as often as possible.
