Nun Monkton is a pretty village near York on the site of a former priory. There is a village green, surrounded by lovely houses; a huge maypole; a Norman church with a wonderful wooded approach and a hall with a stunning yew hedge, near the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Nidd.

Nearby Upper Poppleton had a neat church with a magnificent blue coloured fir tree in the graveyard covered in immature cones. There was a large family of rats playing in the village pond.
