Sanquhar

A celebratory family funeral took us to Motherwell, but we stayed in Sanquhar, where I spent the first months of my life.

From my cousin David, I learned that my mother was born in this house:

The Tollbooth is a significant bollard at the north end of the High Street and provides the main focus of excitement as articulated lorries meet other traffic on the blind bend.

The Inscriptions on the bench (NEVER INJURE A FRIEND) and by the main door (GOD SEND GRACE) could not be bettered.

Sanquhar's Post Office is the oldest in the world, that still sells stamps.

My annual childhood holidays started and ended here.

Sanquhar has more churches than expected for the town's size, which may echo its history of strong religious radicalism.

The monument commemorates The Sanquhar Declaration. Disestablishmentarianism the hard way.
