Wardsend Cemetery

Wardsend Cemetery is tucked away behind the Liquorice Allsorts factory in Sheffield.

.

Derelict Victorian cemeteries convey a strong message. The problem is that I am not sure what the message is.

.

While each headstone carries an individual message their concentration and sense of abandonment leaves one wondering if it was worth it.

.

The conclusion is the obvious one. Cemeteries and gravestones are for the living rather than the dead. But who cares after the living have died?

.

While some inscriptions are poignant others come off the shelf.

A note from the website of The Friends of Wardsend Cemetery:

http://www.friendsofwardsendcemetery.btck.co.uk/

"This cemetery is the last resting place of over 30,000 Sheffield and district people as well as military personnel from the nearby Sheffield (Hillsborough) Barracks.

Although it remained legally open for burials until 1988, Wardsend Cemetery has been increasingly neglected over the last thirty or so years and following the demolition of the chapel and sexton's house, was more or less abandoned by the parish and church authorities".
