Elsecar Station was planned by Earl Fitzwilliam (of Wentworth Woodhouse) so he could have his own private terminus and avoid contact with common folk. The station and associated workshops have been reborn as a heritage site with Lottery money providing scant compensation for the closure of all the pits in Barnsley.
I arrived on a very sunny Sunday morning and struggled with the contrast and the glare.
The station has the usual collection of unrelated memorabilia although I suppose a fire engine and a phone box do have something in common.

There was even a mystery machine.

The Elsecar Heritage Railway seemed quite lively with several working engines.

The site includes a Newcomen Beam Engine house. I have a great affection for the atmospheric engine. It epitomises genius. A simple concept with a far reaching impact.
