Cromford

Our quick whiz around Cromford started at Masson Mills, although our arrival at the museum was delayed by the all day breakfast on offer. It was worth the wait. Our visit was a little compromised by trying to avoid bumping in to a guided tour but it did mean that we found the Bobbin Room.

The lighting in the workshops was challenging but the sense of engineering genius was palpable in all parts of the mill.

A short walk along the Cromford Canal brought us to High Peak Junction where the former railway linked with the canal.

Waggons full of quarried stone were eased down the steep hill by cables and engines.

The walk down the extensive Cromford Hill, took us past the agreeable three storey houses that Arkwright built for his workers, and we ended our circular tour at Cromford Mill, Arkwright's original factory.

The architecture was purposeful and elegant but little remained of interest, now that most buildings had been converted into offices and flats.
