Rotherham Minster and Sunflowers

I'm afraid that I'm losing faith in my Lumix superzoom. The results are simply too soft to satisfy. Is it my laziness at not using a tripod or a basic problem with the small sensor? Where better to test my faith than Rotherham Minster where a tripod and HDR (High Dynamic Range) produced results that may not be to everyone's taste but largely let the camera off the hook.
