Cherry Tree Cottages

Most of my walks these days pass over the River Don using the American Bridge by Cherry Tree Cottages.

In WW2 there was a regiment of black GIs stationed at Wortley Hall and it is fanciful to believe that they built this metal bridge to replace the former wooden structure. The 315 soldiers were from the 65th Ordnance Company and were the first black soldiers to arrive in Britain.

There is a fine set of stepping stones and a weir nearby.
