Memorials

On my birthday we took a picnic to Silkstone Fall and sat by the memorial to the Barnsley Pals, who trained there before leaving for the slaughter of The Somme. 500 left and 200 returned.

Although the information board says different this seems to me to be a miner saying farewell to his family and embracing his new comrades.

There is a chapel in the woods nearby.

The bluebells were disappointing but the wild garlic was magnificent.

I was hoping to find some interest in Penistone Parish Church graveyard but failed. However I was rather taken with the weathered faces on the surround of the west door.

At the bottom of the churchyard there is a memorial to Nicholas Saunderson. A local lad who, despite being blind, became professor of mathematics at Cambridge in 1711. It is said that her learned to read by tracing the lettering on the gravestones with his fingers.
