Reflections on Newark

We popped down to Newark to buy a bike rack but gave ourselves plenty of time to picnic and explore.

It's a magnificent town with the market place dominated by the stunning spire of Saint Mary Magdalene and the castle ruins towering above the mighty River Trent and the Town Lock.

Several warehouses bear witness to its history as an inland port and there are many magnificent houses to testify to the wealth created. Newark has the largest inland dry dock in the UK.

The current restrictions meant that the town was largely deserted and the reflections in the shop windows told a familiar story of a once vibrant town centre in decline with the likelihood that many of the small shops will not survive the current crisis.

The Victorian building is the School of Violin Making and Repair. Wow!

I lingered at the Market Place, enjoying the red and white awnings and the red and white buildings, with or without the occasional uni-cyclist.

Some of the medieval buildings are very fine indeed.
