Littleborough

Meandering around rural North Nottinghamshire brought me to Littleborough Church.

.

This tiny church was built on the site of a Roman settlement and incorporates Roman wall tiles in its construction, often in herring bone patterns. The interior feels ancient with the Norman chancel arch being supported on Saxon pillars.

.

While I found the church itself rather lacking in character I was very taken with the tiny vestry (probably added in the mid 19th century) and had a vision of a poor Victorian cleric sat at the table with a couple of candles, struggling to write his sermon on a bitterly cold evening. There is no fireplace.

.

I noticed that one of the two roles of honour was nearly falling out of its frame so I moved it to the table. While I did not study them in detail, the fact that there were over twenty names of young men from such a small rural community is both a reminder of how many worked on the land prior to WW1 and how many of these were killed.

.

More memories, of times when church life was active, were associated with the bell ropes and the marks made on the Norman door arch and the delightful four stop organ.

The cheap little letter rack seemed to sum up this bleak, forgotten posting for both young curates and Roman soldiers.
