Wortley Forge and Hall

As I had a new acquisition (Sony RX 100) to test, and the weather was rotten, I popped round to the local places of interest.

Wortley Top Forge is an industrial museum chock full of old stuff

.

The grounds are littered with any old iron

 .

I have photographed this steam roller before but it seems to have been shy on this occasion.

After the rusty chaos of Top Forge I moved to the ordered gentility of Wortley Hall.

Alice Stuart Wortley was a "friend" of Elgar. He called her Windflower and she was the inspiration for his violin concerto. She may have walked through this door on her way to Saint Leonard's church.

.

The stables are impressive but in a poor state of repair.

.

One wonders how much the residents of the hall, with all its formal aloofness, reflected on those that dug the coal and smelted the iron to keep them superior.

.

A muddy walk in a nearby wood got me back in top old habits.
