Otley and Elsecar

After dropping Brenda off at Leads Bradford Airport I pottered on to Otley, a pleasant market town on the River Wharfe.

Following an enquiry at the tourist information I set off to Otley Chevin; a hill over looking the town with (on a clearer day) fine views of Wharfedale. What I found was a challenge to the older photographer; deep mud, slippery rocks and vicious brambles. Falling down while holding a camera is no joke and I was relieved to leave with only my pride damaged.

A visit to nearby Elsecar presented fewer risks. The Earls Fitzwilliam were the richest men in the country and lived in the biggest house (Wentworth Woodhouse). The church is a pleasant no nonsense Victorian building that we were surprised to find open. The condition for English Heritage repairing the church roof recently was to sentence the good ladies of Elsecar, to make sure that church is open to the public for one day a week, for 12 years.

Brian and I were allowed in the gallery and bell room but not up the tower and being a couple of old miseries we resisted the invitation to take tea with the noble ladies.

Elsecar Heritage Centre contains the Earls' private station and associated workshops. It was teeming with orange overalled volunteers. More noble people. But rather than offer our services we opted for the comfort of a bacon sandwich at the nearby tea room.
