Birkin

We dodged the rain and popped over to the wonderful Norman church at Birkin, near Knottingly. Even though the church was closed there was plenty to enjoy with the exterior. The lovely apse, the corbel table with grotesque heads, the fabulous door and even the plastic leaves around the porch.

In seeking more information I came across this excellent website. A pity Lionel has not learned to correct his verticals. Extracts from his book contain a rare section on mooning.

Beforehand we had walked along the Aire and Calder Navigation from Knottingly to Ferrybridge Lock and back. We just missed the demolition of one of the cooling towers at this decommissioned power station but were pleased to see the original ferry bridge.
